Baby Watch 2009: Will Labor Day be...LABOR DAY?!?

Lynne had a doctor's appointment last week and she found out she was 2-1/2 centimeters dilated.
Ten centimeters means the baby is on his/her way, so it was a bit surprising that Lynne was one-quarter of the way home with nary a contraction. Some people go to the hospital with contractions five minutes apart (the magic interval!) and they aren't at 2 centimeters yet. Still, the distance between 2.5 centimeters and 10 centimeters can be weeks.
Lynne's due date is Sept. 26. Both she and Matt think Baby may arrive early because he or she has been measuring ahead for a while.
Either way, the doctor was very non-chalant about 2.5 centimeters.
Then, Lynne had another appointment on Friday. She was more than bit surprised to find out that she is now 4 centimeters dilated. Still no contractions, but things seem to be developing.
Does that mean the baby is on his/her way out into the world? Maybe. But it could very well still be three weeks.
On the other hand, the doctor said that if her water breaks everyone should head to the hospital right away because the baby could come fast. This is essentially Lynne's dream come true and Matt's worst nightmare.
Lynne wants this baby out right! now!
Meanwhile, Matt knows he has had only one real job throughout this whole pregnancy. Oh sure, he's helped around the house and dispensed back rubs liberally. But his only true function is to drive Lynne to the hospital before the baby arrives. (He's still haunted by a Saved by The Bell episode where Mrs. Belding gave birth in an elevator and Zack had to deliver it.) So, if Matt ends up pulling over to the side of the road to deliver Baby in the car, then he has failed at the single job he was assigned. The doctors said it has never happened before - which is all the more reason to make sure it doesn't happen to Lynne and Matt. No need to be the cautionary tale.
Anyhow, back in 4-centimeter land...Lynne is sitting around encouraging the baby to head for the exit. And Matt is running in circles like a nut, afraid to leave her side. Every time she burps, he assumes the baby is about to show up.
