Scoooooorecards! Getch yur scoooorecards here!
TABLE 16 - Jack Perconte: The slick-fielding infielder wore #16 in his one season with the Indians. He was twice MVP at Murray State. He’s married to The Rev. Linda Misewicz-Perconte, who officiated Lynne and Matt’s wedding. He also enjoys reading.
TABLE 28 - Matt Hanley: This very light-hitting and average fielding second baseman hit a robust .308 in 1991 with 7 hits, 4 RBIs and no homers. Sadly, the Big League offers never materialized and he retired to life of obscure writing.
TABLE 53 - Moose Skowron: When he came up in 1953, Moose wore #53. He went on to hit eight World Series homers, won five rings and was inducted to the Polish-American Hall of Fame. Later, Matt, his dad and grandpa met him in a Hoffman Estates video store.
Here's what Lynne and Matt learned during a wonderful wedding weekend:
Well, here we are, one day away from The Big Day - finally! Zero months left. A goose egg. 0. Nada. Nothing. Zip. Zilch. No more monkeys jumping in the bed.
Lynne's Aunt Carol will be doing The First Reading. Carol is Lynne's mom's sister, seen here on the far right. (Lynne is shown practicing her pose for when Matt tells one of his famous jokes.) Aunt Carol has been a really important person in Lynne's life, because even though she lives far away - with her husband, Rick, in Raleigh, North Carolina - she has always made a huge effort to spend time with Lynne and her sisters. She usually visits at least twice a year, with one of those visits falling on either Christmas or Thanksgiving. In fact, the Seago girls often comment that Christmas just doesn't feel like Christmas if Aunt Carol isn't there. Typically, Aunt Carol is known for snapping her fingers a lot, singing the old "Milk for Mom" commercial whenever she looks in the refrigerator, and (one of Lynne's Dad's favorite moments) talking in a tiny voice from the back of her throat. She's also very sweet and super helpful - she even flew in five days early to help Lynne and her mom get ready for The Big Day. Lynne and Matt are very excited to have her participate in the wedding, despite her worries that everyone will see her reading glasses. ;)
5. How many baseball stadiums has Matt visited? (And do you know which ones they are?)
12:30 PM: Wedding party women (that's Leslie, Laura, Megan, Lynne, Mrs. Seago, & Mrs. Hanley) report to Egg Harbor Cafe in downtown Naperville. Lynne's Aunt Carol will treat everyone to a luncheon and manicures/pedicures at nearby Zano's Salon.
10:00 PM-ish: After the Rehearsal Dinner, Matt and Lynne will head to Mullen's Bar & Grill. If you are already in town for the wedding and would like to see Lynne and Matt before the Big Day, feel free to come join is! One warning: Lynne gets pretty tired, so she'll have to leave Mullen's before she turns into a pumpkin. Matt's a Night Owl, though, so he just might close the place down... especially if Alex is with him.
6:00 PM: Cocktail hour begins at the Holiday Inn. Drinks and appetizers will be served. Shrimp fans should note that Mr. Seago ordered Jumbo Shrimp especially for the occasion, so be sure to save him a few of those.
Then Lynne would explain. The Ring is Lynne's grandmother's engagement ring. (If you look really really closely, you can see it in the picture on the right.) It was originally given to Lynne's grandmother, Betty Mitchell, by her then boyfriend Red Stewart. The date of their engagement has since been lost, but it was probably during the summer of 1940. Lynne's grandmother wore The Ring from 1940 until her death in 1986, when first Lynne's grandad and then Lynne's Aunt Carol cared for it. Aunt Carol offered Matt the ring in the summer of 2007, so he could give it to Lynne.
And that's not even the whole Ring Story. Like Lynne, Matt also had a close bond with is grandparents, especially his grandpa Matt Hanley, who passed away in 2006. When Lynne and Matt were preparing to buy their wedding rings, Mr. Hanley offered Matt his grandpa's ring, pictured at left. It was given to The Original Matt Hanley by his wife, Anne Garvey, on their wedding day: August 28, 1948. He wore it on his finger for over 57 years.
Matt stared at the tiny dollops of ... what were they? Does jelly go on cake? Isn't pudding it's own food? How can there be white and red cakes - those are colors, not flavors, right?
Cake Girl asked them to start tasting and match the insides with the cake.
Matt took a little taste of the banana bread. (An aside: Why so little bread? This seemed like a place with endless amounts - possibly vats of bread and icing - yet the samples were designed for Lilliputians. Second, yes, Matt knows it's probably not called 'bread'. Whatever.) Mmmmmm. Hmmmm. Matt took a little taste of the frosting (lemon). Mmmmm. Hmmmmm. Pledge and bananas. It was good. So was chocolate and chocolate, white cake and strawberry, carrot and jelly.
Mmmmm. Hmmmm. Yum. Um?
Then, Cake Girl opened up her book and showed Lynne and Matt (non-edible) pictures of cake after cake after cake. Pick whichever one you like, she offered.
Matt wondered what he was looking for. Structural stability? Height? Canoe-like shape?
Of course, in the end Lynne picked combinations that actually made sense while Matt sat at her side, like a primate, eating the leftover rows of frosting.
None of this fazed Lynne. Now, some might say Lynne is low-key and low-maintenance, which would certainly be true. But, maybe, she just knows Matt doesn't know a thing and he's happy to agree with her good choices.
Oh, so what kind of cake did they pick? Well, Matt was instructed by Lynne, with the express written consent of Major League Baseball, not to tell. Lynne says she wants it to be a surprise on The Big Day.
And there you go. As soon as you do learn something, you're not supposed to tell anyone. Matt's learning.
Last week, Lynne and Matt took part in yet another of the pre-wedding traditions: The Tasting. They went to the Holiday Inn (do you have a room yet?) where Lynne, Matt, the Seagos and the Hanleys got to sample all the possible wedding meals until their bellies burst. (Figuratively only.)

What follows is a synopsis of Lynne's dream, as told to Matt, via cell phone on April 9, 2008. No details were changed, pretty much.
